In the Roman Catholic tradition, the bride and groom minister the sacrament of marriage to one another; the priest or deacon and two witnesses are also required to be present.
Ordinarily, a parish priest will preside at wedding celebrations at Holy Family. Sometimes, a couple may have a priest friend or priest relative whom they want to invite to preside at their wedding. Mention this early in the process of preparation with the parish priest who is working with you.
Visiting priests will be asked to observe parish customs, as well as receive delegation from one of the parish priests. A visiting priest from outside the Diocese of San Jose is to obtain from his diocesan bishop or religious superior a letter of suitability for ministry stating that he is in good standing, and has no civil or canonical impediments that would preclude him from ministry.
Music is an integral part of Catholic worship. Therefore, the selection of liturgically appropriate music played live is essential. Popular secular songs or any pre-recorded music is not acceptableIt must be live music such as an instrumental, individual vocal, or choir. Ordinarily, the music ministers in the parish will provide music for the weddings celebrated in the parish. The couple is responsible for speaking with the organist, pianist, vocalist, etc., with regard to music and fees. If you request that a music minister other than those who serve the parish provide music for your wedding, it may be necessary to enlist the paid services of one of our parish's sound technicians.
Couples are asked to invite friends or family members to serve as a lector, proclaiming one or more of the Scripture readings and the reading of the intercessions. It is important that you choose those who have the necessary gifts for proclaiming God’s word effectively and reverently. These same persons should be at the wedding rehearsal, so that they may practice in the worship space with the sound system.
The groom’s attendants usually function as ushers and thus fulfill part of the ministry of hospitality. The bride’s attendants and the couple’s families may also act as ministers of hospitality.
If the wedding is to be celebrated with a Mass, the parish will provide altar servers. Use of altar servers who are not altar servers at Holy Family is not allowed. It is customary to provide them with a small monetary gift of $20 and this fee is payable directly to them the day of the wedding.
Ring bearers and flower girls are not ministers. You are asked to consider the age and temperament of the children involved in these roles.
Another person who shares an important role in the preparation and celebration of your marriage ceremony is the parish wedding coordinator. Ordinarily, the wedding coordinator will be of assistance to you at the time of the rehearsal and in making plans for your ceremony.
