Although No Name-Calling Week is Jan. 18-22, it's a good idea at all times. This annual event was created by K-12 students and teachers, is carried on in schools, and is based on the novel The Misfits, in which a group of students are bullied by name-calling, then use a No Name-Calling platform to run for student council. The idea is to take ammunition away from bullies, make students’ lives more livable, and exercise kindness. That’s done by using the names a person actually wants to have used for them, not ones related to stereotypes, slurs, or other demeaning terms. I think it's a great idea. How about if adults observe the week, too? Imagine no name-calling at work or home, on the road or in bustling crowds, at sporting events or in bars, in discussions where you disagree....everywhere.
