In 1531 La Virgen de Guadalupe appeared to an indigenous man named Juan Diego on the hilltop of Tepeyac. It is at this location that the Basilica of La Virgen de Guadalupe in Mexico City is now located. Twelve million people visit the Basilica each year. Her apparition is celebrated around the world on December 12th. On this day thousands visit the Basilica, some walking miles or even days. In 1979 she was proclaimed Mother of the Americas. In 2002 Juan Diego was canonized by Pope John Paul II in a ceremony at the Basilica in Mexico City.
The Our Lady of Guadalupe Society invites you to a sunrise/mañanitas celebration in honor of La Virgen de Guadalupe at 5 am on December 12th. The mass is celebrated with music by the Trio Majia Blanca and then a traditional breakfast reception.
